With the rapid expansion of the photovoltaic industry, the recycling and processing of large quantities of solar panels that have reached the end of their service life has become a critical issue. These decommissioned modules are not industrial waste. Scrap solar panels contain a wealth of valuable materials. Solar panels are high-tech products, and the valuable materials within them—including metals such as silicon, silver, and aluminum, as well as semiconductor materials—can all be recycled. These materials are essential components of solar panels. When processed using specialized solar panel recycling machines, This effectively reduces the need for new resource extraction and lowers production costs. It also significantly reduces pollution throughout the process, thereby enabling the circular reuse of resources.
Collection and Sorting
Retired solar panels are dismantled from power plants or rooftops across various locations and transported to solar panel recycling plants. Specialists first inspect the components’ structure and appearance, removing severely damaged or mixed-type panels. This stage involves pre-processing the waste solar panels to improve the efficiency of subsequent recycling and treatment.
Physical Disassembly and Pyrolysis
For single-glass PV panels, an aluminum frame removal machine and a glass removal machine are first used to effectively disassemble and remove the aluminum frame, junction box, and glass. The remaining PV cell modules are then processed through a crushing and sorting production line, where they are broken down and sorted into silicon powder, plastic, and aluminum particles. For double-glass PV panels, a pyrolysis process is required. The encapsulating EVA film is heated in a pyrolysis furnace; the high temperature softens the film, allowing the separation of glass, silicon wafers, copper wires, and other materials. The material then undergoes multiple sorting steps—including air separation and gravity separation—to isolate pure glass, silicon wafers, and copper wires. These recovered materials are sent directly to downstream industries for reuse.
Chemical Extraction of Metals
The solar cells separated in the upstream process contain materials such as silver, silicon, and copper. Solar panel recycling plants use mild acid and alkali solutions to dissolve the silver and copper from the silicon wafers. Through electrolysis or displacement reactions, higher-purity silver powder and copper are then obtained. The remaining silicon wafers are washed and crushed before being upgraded into polysilicon feedstock. The metals recovered through hydrometallurgical extraction can be used to manufacture new photovoltaic cells or semiconductor devices.
Environmental Management and Control
Exhaust gases, residues, and wastewater generated throughout the physical sorting and hydrometallurgical extraction processes undergo rigorous purification treatment. The wastewater treatment system at solar panel recycling plants neutralizes acids and alkalis to ensure discharges comply with current environmental standards. The small amount of residue generated during the recycling process is sent to specialized treatment facilities to ensure harmless disposal throughout the entire chain.

In summary, the solar cell recycling industry will present more economic opportunities. Focus on the circular economy by reintroducing recycled materials into production as much as possible to reduce the demand for raw materials and alleviate environmental pressure.
